Wu Xin, chief technology officer of Biocloud, participated in this activity and shared the theme of "accelerating the application of artificial intelligence and leading precision breeding".   Dr. Wu Xin said that seeds are agricultural "chips", and high-tech breeding is the most important core technology to ensure national food security. With the application and promotion of high-throughput automated phenotype and genotype detection technology, public scientific research and private breeding will generate massive phenotype and genotype data. In the future, breeding decisions will increasingly change from personal experience driven to data driven, from manual and artistic to large-scale and industrialized. The management and application of breeding big data will become a new infrastructure project in China's agricultural seed industry, and the ability to accurately analyze and mine data will become the core competitiveness of breeding.

01 About the problem

There are problems everywhere in the biological breeding industry, but the problems are also opportunities. The progress of China's biological breeding industry is about 15 years different from that of foreign countries, about 1.5 generations. In the past two years, China's agricultural policy has improved, especially the emphasis on commercial breeding in the No. 1 central document, which will bring a very positive signal to the market and industry. Because commercial breeding companies in China, especially small and medium-sized entrepreneurial science and technology breeding companies, are difficult to obtain practical support in terms of policy and capital tax. The government, scientific research institutions and enterprises need to clarify the responsibilities and rights of each party, and do a good job in and coordinate with the top-level design of breeding, especially the system design and implementation of commercial breeding, otherwise it is difficult to break through the status quo.

02 About challenges

The commercial breeding mentioned in the No. 1 central document is a positive signal. Therefore, breeding enterprises should grasp the policy signal, strengthen their own capacity building, and actively embrace the cutting-edge technology and market, so as to win the opportunity to overtake at corners. Small and medium-sized innovative breeding enterprises must maintain strategic determination, unswervingly focus on breeding itself to do business, and develop around the seed market.

03 About integration

Ecological integration of biological breeding companies is imperative. The seed industry has niche of upstream and downstream enterprises at all levels. Especially in the era of intelligent breeding, there has been cross industry integration, such as the integration of IT and breeding, as well as the emergence of technology market segments, such as the emergence of a large number of biological trait companies. Therefore, we need to cross industry integration, complement each other, strengthen cooperation, mutual benefit, and build an industrial ecology. In addition, enterprises should form mutual benefit guarantee in terms of system and technology in terms of germplasm resources and intellectual property rights, so as to achieve a win-win situation.

04 About commercialization

The commercialization of biological breeding is a system that requires the joint efforts of the government and enterprises. Biological breeding companies should adhere to the principle of biological primacy, focus on the ultimate breeding goal, and constantly empower themselves with platform based services. For companies of biological breeding service type, the core is to truly bring value to breeding customers, not only the current value, but also the future value. The business model needs to change from just making customers' money to helping customers make money. Only in this way can the commercialization be sustainable and achieve win-win results.

Special Column on Breeding | 5 - Low Depth Resequencing of Genotyping

The genotype detected by the method of high depth re sequencing is undoubtedly the most comprehensive, but at present, the cost of application in animal and plant breeding is too high, especially for those species with complex and huge genomes. As mentioned in the previous issue, researchers usually use a unique library construction method to carry out simplified genome sequencing (RAD seq), thereby reducing the cost of genotyping.
